Academic Administrative Unit Grant to Institute a Departmental Primary Care Research Infrastructure

Funding from the US Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration

Abstract
Our mission is to contribute research that develops positive health outcomes in primary care populations and prepares future physicians for a more evidence-based future. In 2001, the Department of Family and Community Medicine (FCM) at Michigan State University (MSU) College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) received its first AAU grant to establish a research infrastructure, the Division of Research (DOR).  The DOR provided significant research support to all FCM faculty who have started research projects.  In this continuing application, we propose to: 1) Continue development and solidification of a strong support base for the FCM research infrastructure, AND expand/share that infrastructure with the Pediatrics Department. 2) Support and enhance the scholarly activity of FCM participating faculty (P-Fac) and initiate research training for Peds PFac.  3) Develop and provide asynchronous distance learning in research methods and strategies for community-based faculty (CB-Fac) in order to foster their participation in research activities.  Needs have been strongly expressed at national, state and local levels for more attention to primary care research.  National healthcare workforce competencies, & state and local needs are addressed within a framework of strong community linkages and a minority/underrepresented student population. Methods include distance learning, resource consolidation and dissemination, mentoring, and individual plans. Training addresses various public health issues, including cultural competence, diabetes and asthma. The Evaluation Plan measures participant and program achievement at baseline, formatively and summatively for both processes and outcomes. A Dissemination Plan for faculty and project research results is provided.
